Thank You, Everyone
I have to say, I'm so very, very thankful for all of the kind words and comments about my Mother's passing. While it has not been an easy time for me, your words and thoughts brought me a great deal of comfort. It really means a lot that so many people wrote. I am deeply grateful .I'm glad I had the opportunity to write about my mother here, to share some of her story, and to introduce her, in a way, to all the readers of Kyle's B&B. There's so much I left out, but then, how can you capture someone completely in just a few paragraphs? Perhaps I'll continue to post about her every now & then, to fill in more of the details about her background, (like the fact that she was a Broadway queen, attending hundreds of historic plays during the golden age of Broadway. She also saved all the Playbills from those times, and what an amazing roster of performances she saw, such as Marlon Brando in "Streetcar", Robert Redford in "Barefoot in the Park", and many, many more).
But for now, I just have to say thank you so much, again. And here's one more photo, of my Mother and myself in Ireland, atop Ross Castle in Killarney.

Episode # 155 - June 17th, 2008
You may have noticed the new episode is not actually a "new" episode. Because of my mother's recent passing, things are still in the process of getting back to normal, and I needed some time to regroup. Hence, for the first time in Kyle's B&B history, I am running a re-run. Actually, a kind of sweet episode from several years ago, that, even if you've seen it before, you may enjoy it again. And yes, next time it will be back to new episodes!Just CLICK on the episode image, at left, to view it at FULL SIZE.
(Don't try reading it at this size, or you'll miss out on all the detail!). Click on the pic!
I also wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who wrote me such sweet comments in regards to my Mother's passing. It really, really helped and I'm so deeply touched by the very kind words and thoughts. (In fact, I plan on making a separate post about this in a few days, but I wanted to say something here, too). Thank you so much, my friends.

Eleanor Ann Fox, Rest in Peace, Mother
My mother passed away last Tuesday morning. I felt like it was important to share this here, as there wouldn't be a Kyle's Bed & Breakfast if not for her. Not only because she gave birth to me, but also because of all of the support and encouragement she gave me throughout my life, to pursue my dreams and to aim for excellence in whatever I do.My mother was an amazing person.... beautiful, brilliant, generous, kind, and extremely hard-working. She graduated from high school at 15, after being accelerated 2 grades, and got her bachelor's degree 4 years later, graduating from college at 19, when most people are just getting started with college! From there, she went immediately into her chosen field, teaching.
Liberated before there was ever a "Women's Lib" movement, I don't think it ever occurred to her to be anything but a strong, confident self-sufficient woman.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, her father was from Italy, and her mother was of Irish-German descent. My mother had the gorgeous, crystal blue eyes of her father, which apparently are quite common in the Naples region of Italy where he was born. (My older brother & sister inherited them, too, and I suppose I
did also, although with a touch of green from my Irish father's side). She actually modeled for a bit, back when the big NYC department stores had women modeling clothes on runways for the public to observe and be dazzled by. But I think she was far more interested in books and intellectual pursuits to ever take that too seriously. She met my father, (also a teacher, also born & raised in Brooklyn, NY), in her mid-twenties. After they were married, they eventually moved out on to Long Island, to Huntington, (in the West Hills area, most famous for being Walt Whitman's birthplace). She took some years off from teaching to raise my brother, sister, and myself, (I came along a bit later than my brother and sister, born when my mother was almost 40. But she took it in stride, going back to college to get her Masters degree soon after I was born, and then back to teaching).
Life wasn't always happy times for my mother, though. When I was 10 years old, a couple of years after we'd moved to a new house in Cold Spring Hills, my father passed away. Incredibly, my mother kept our living situation stable. Thank God for her successful teaching career. We never lost our house, and I never felt like we were in need in any way. She had a way of making me feel
safe, secure, and well-cared for. That included making sure I was able to go to college & get my BA degree at Geneseo College, a magnificent experience for which I have her to thank. I'm also grateful that she, (and my father), were of the philosophy that one should go for a career where your heart is, not necessarily where the money is, (and if they can coincide, that's great, too! But she never put the pressure on me to find some Wall Street-type job, when that so clearly was not where my head was at).
My mother felt it was very important to travel, so, from a very young age, I saw the world at her side. Originally, my whole family went on some amazing trips together, but after my father passed away, and my brother & sister were off on their own, my Mother and I traveled together, just the 2 of us, far & wide. Because we have plenty of family in California, that also meant a lot of
trips there. (Some people still think I'm from California, due to my accent and general demeanor). The fact that California is such a rich part of my history and life-experience is another thing I have my mother to thank for. We also went on a number of great vacations with my Aunt Sheila and Uncle Vincent, which may have started my love affair with the state of Vermont. After I'd went to college, and in the years afterward, I'm so glad my mother got to go off traveling on a bunch of great trips with her friends, to see the places she'd always dreamed of. Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Ireland, and a lot of other places, (I'm especially glad she got to see France, as she'd always dreamed of going to Paris). She also started a new phase of her life after retiring; never one to sit still for long, and always eager to help people, she became a dedicated volunteer for many years at Huntington Hospital.
My mother and I were both big fans of figure skating, and I have many warm memories of us watching the competitions on TV and critiquing the various skaters. I think it reminded her of her dancing days, back in college when she was voted the best dancer in the Newman Club.
Some of my warmest memories, too, are of the TV shows we'd watch together and talk about. I think her favorite of all time was the Mary Tyler-Moore
Show. She just loved that show, and I think I may need to buy the DVD box sets just to somehow feel closer to her now. She also liked a lot of the police shows like Hill Street Blues and LA Law, and of course Law & Order. She would often mention that if she were to do it all over again, she'd like to have become a lawyer. And she was a BIG fan of ER, especially of George Clooney, (who, she always would mention, "has a very handsome father").I don't want to sugarcoat everything here; it's not like we had a Norman Rockwell family relationship. (Even Norman Rockwell didn't have a Norman Rockwell family relationship! Trust me, I'm a big fan, I read his biography). This is really my own fault, but... knowing the strong Catholic background of my mother, I never really felt comfortable discussing many gay topics with her. It's not like I was in the closet with her, (please, she was too smart and I'm too outspoken for that to ever happen. And then, of course, the New York Times interviewed me about Kyle's Bed & Breakfast, which, believe me, is a good way to come out to
everyone in your life in one shot). But I just never felt very comfortable including her in that aspect of my life. However, she met and was quite friendly with my boyfriends, and I never heard her utter a single anti-gay phrase or sentiment, about anyone. Perhaps I should've been more inclusive; she was certainly sophisticated and intelligent enough to handle it. This was completely my fault. But then, things were getting difficult for my mother as the years passed. After 2002, she began having some very serious health issues. Facing them all with her usual grace and fortitude, it was admirable, but heart-wrenching. I'm grateful I was able to be there for her, for so many of the doctor's visits and various challenges. But it was a darker time for her. For someone who was so used to traveling and living independently, it frustrated her to not be able to drive anymore, to go to the supermarket, (something she loved to do previously), to go traveling the world. The past year was particularly challenging, and the past month, excruciating. I'm grateful, at least, that in her final week, she was able to go somewhat peacefully.
My mother never remarried after my father died. She never dated, never even showed much interest in any other men, (except for perhaps George Clooney.... and his father! LOL). Seriously, though... I think she was so in love with my father, and missed him so much, she just couldn't bear to be with anyone else.
I'd like to think they're finally together now, after all this time, after all these struggles. I hope you're in a joyful, sweet place, Mommy... you've earned it.
I love you, and I miss you so much.

Nick Cardy
Today I went to the New York City Comicon, (the massive comics convention that happens once a year in New York... similar to the one in San Diego that takes place in the summer). There were lots of interesting moments and people I connected, (and re-connected), with. But I'd like to talk about my peak experience at the convention today: meeting one of my artistic heroes, the man who's work means so very much to me, and has influenced me so deeply and given me so many hours of pleasure to view. The magnificent Nick Cardy!
Nick was pretty much phasing out of the comic book world at the very time that I, as a little kid, began reading comic books. I do recall, that first year I was reading comics, he was still doing all of the covers for the DC books, to spectacular, dramatic effect. (Just look at some of the samples I've pasted here! And, please... click on them to view them larger and with more clarity).
It wasn't until a few years later, thanks to DC Comics penchant for reprinting a lot of their 60s comic books in new editions, that I was able to see many of the stories he'd drawn so masterfully at that time. The original Teen Titans... various Batman team-ups in the Brave & the Bold.... Aquaman's 1960s run.... and of course, all of those brilliant covers!I've been fortunate enough to meet just about all of my "heroes" in the comic book industry through the years. (And there are quite a few of them!). But Nick Cardy, somehow, stands out just a bit above all the rest. And I'd never had the privilege to meet him, and I guess I'd never thought I would. I'd heard he moved to Florida and was retired, and I'd never heard about him appearing at any conventions, especially in the New York area.
So, what a delight and honor it was to be able to meet him today. Nick is now 87 years old, looked to be in great shape and spirits, and is still drawing, (I got to watch him for a bit today, as he did some sketches). Miraculously, I was able to spend some time alone with him, talking about his art, how much it has meant to me, and then we got to talk about techniques and pencils and layout and lots of technical stuff that, as an artist, was priceless for me to hear. And then... I got to show him some of my Kyle's Bed & Breakfast work... which he spent time looking though, and liked quite a bit! I think I was on cloud nine at this point.
I hadn't really planned on having him sign anything for me... I generally don't collect comic books in that sort of "collectible" way... but I figured, this is Nick Cardy! I have to have him sign something! So, I did bring along a copy of the Flash #225, (I've pasted a copy here... it's the last cover I've posted, at the very end of this post...the one with the Flash, the Reverse-Flash, and Green Lantern on it). And while I was at the convention, where there are lots of comic book dealers, I happened to find several copies of Bat Lash, a western book he drew in the late 60s for a 7 issue run, that I'd never seen before but is considered some of his best work. So, I had him sign those also.
As I was leaving, he said how much my compliments of his work really touched him, meant the world to him. I hope he knows just how many people have been touched so deeply and profoundly by his work. I hope I conveyed that to him, in some small way. And I hope I'm able, in my own way, to carry the fire, the energy, the warmth and compassion and lushness he created in his artwork in my workHow awesome when you find out one of your heroes is also a warm, kind, considerate person, too!
What a day!

Poll Results: "Who is your Supporting Character Dream Date?"

Well, the votes are in, and who came out on top, as the #1 most desired dream date amongst all of the supporting characters in the comic strip?
Who else, but the hairy-chested, southern-fried, leather-clad, former baseball catcher, present nurse who you just know gives the most enjoyable sponge baths? That would be Jeff Olsen, South Carolina's finest, now taking up residence at the B&B for what looks like may be his longest, (and most tumultuous!), stay so far!
Being that Kyle Graham was the #1 pick in the last poll, (most desired dream date amongst the main cast), and Jeff is now established as the most desired dream date from the supporting cast... doesn't it seem like it would be appropriate for the two of them to go out on a date together?
Well, could be quite a bit of fun, but.... Kyle won't be doing any dates with Jeff for the foreseeable future, as we all know that Breyer & Kyle are a well-established couple. And, as we've all seen most recently, Jeff seems to have his hands full with the Brad-Matt-post-breakup crazy love triangle mess.
Of course, as long-time readers of the comic strip know, Kyle & Jeff did have an intense, (though brief), romantic moment during Jeff's very first visit to the B&B! I won't give it away if you haven't seen it yet, but it involved a couch, some kissing, and some very tight boxer shorts!
In any case, congrats to Jeff for his win, and here are the final results for all characters in the poll, (more commentary will be below):

Dave Yager | 20 (6%) |
Matt Allen | 28 (8%) |
Jeff Olsen | 112 (34%) |
Delia Armstrong | 1 (0%) |
Andrew Jiang | 40 (12%) |
William McGrath | 1 (0%) |
Breyer Watkins | 86 (26%) |
Jean-Pierre Chevignon | 17 (5%) |
Ultimately, it came down to pretty much a 2 man race, between Jeff & Breyer, with Andrew Jiang showing up a distant third. (Andrew was kind of like the John Edwards of the democratic party!). I was surprised Matt didn't place higher, (he did OK; he's in 4th place, but nowhere near the numbers of Jeff & Breyer). I was also expecting more from Nick, always a reader favorite. Delia & William tied for last place, with an unfortunate one vote a piece! I was surprised about that for Delia, (where are all the female readers who claim to love her so much?). And not so surprised about William; many readers didn't even know just who exactly William is, (for the record, he's Andrew's boyfriend/partner, and hasn't had all that many B&B appearances).
If you're still wondering about which characters are which, I invite you to check out the Meet the Cast page, where all of the main cast & supporting cast bios & pics are. (Except for William, who didn't actually rate a bio of his own. Perhaps I'll have to change that; I kind of like William!).
Thanks for your participation in the poll; be sure to stop back on Tuesday for the next episode of the comic strip, (and perhaps another poll, before then!).

Poll Results: "Who is your B&B Dream Date?"
Here are the final results of the first poll here at the Kyle's B&B website, (the question was, "Who is your B&B Dream Date?"). 341 respondents came up with the following results:
Poor Richard! And Lance, too. Well, I suppose it's nice that they got some votes, at least. Of course, I heard from a number of readers whose "dream date" wouldn't be any of those guys, but would be one of the supporting characters. So, in the interest of fair play, I'm posting a new poll, to cover the supporting characters in the strip. This should be interesting!
Lance | 20 (5%) |
Brad | 96 (28%) |
Kyle | 148 (43%) |
Richard | 6 (1%) |
Eduardo | 71 (20%) |

Snowfall in Northport

Northport, (and most of the northeastern USA), got hit with a significant snowfall yesterday. It's been a relatively snow-free winter, so this was probably long overdue. I was able to get out and take some pics in the village. The pic above is in the village park, the gazebo still lit up with Christmas lights, (something tells me they're going to leave those up all year long!). Please click to view it larger.
You may recall seeing that very scene in several Kyle's B&B episodes, (minus the snow & lights). One that comes to mind is Kyle & Breyer walking through the park as leaves are falling, discussing Breyer's job situation, and them passing by the gazebo in the final panel.
Oh, and if you're wondering why there was no Readers' Forum Friday posting yesterday, that's because I've decided to move the Readers' Forum to Tuesdays... specifically, every other Tuesday, to fill the void on the weeks when there's no new episode of the comic strip. Does that mean it needs a new name? ( Readers' Talkback Tuesday? Umm... maybe not). Any suggestions?

Readers' Forum Friday
Bill K. of a “small town in Missouri”, (his description!), writes with the following inquiry:
“Greg, I know you obviously have a love for superhero comic books, and that you’ve mentioned a number of times in Kyle’s episodes how some of the guys are comic book fans. I wanted to ask what comic books and comic book artists were your favorite and most influential when you were growing up?”.
Wow, got a few hours? LOL. Seriously, this could take a while to answer. It may end up being the entire column this week, and that still wouldn’t cover everything. I’ll try to be brief.
As a kid, it was pretty much DC comics that held my attention. Marvel would come a bit later. My first real favorites were the Justice League, and the various solo books of the members, (Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, etc). There were a couple of years in the 70s when the penciller of the JLA, Dick Dillin, was being inked by Dick Giordano, and those books are gorgeous, my first real “swoon” moment with comic books. (OK, that’s arguable… perhaps it was Curt Swan who first really grabbed my attention).
In any case, I would soon discover, thanks to DC’s penchant for reprinting 1960s comics in the 1970s, (and also, thanks to a used comic book store nearby my house when I was about 13 years old), the Teen Titans books of the 60s, with the amazing Nick Cardy’s lush illustrations. And then, of course, Nick Cardy was also doing tons of covers for almost every DC book back then, (including my beloved JLA, pictured at left). Something about his art had the most indefinable charisma to it. It still floors me.
This all lead up to what ended up becoming, possibly, my favorite comic book of all time… the Legion of Super-Heroes. That incredible teen-aged team, (23 members strong!), from the 30th century. At that point they were being drawn by Mike Grell, in what for me was the perfect marriage of artist and subject matter.
Grell, also famous for some of his skimpy Legion costume designs, including what has probably become the most famously homo-erotic super-hero costume of all time, Cosmic Boy’s “barely there” 1970s, um… I don’t know quite how to describe it. Perhaps it’s better to just show you:
I later discovered that Mike Grell had been preceded as artist of the Legion by the spectacular Dave Cockrum, (thanks to that used comic book store, I got to collect almost all of his back issues!). Now, this man was a visionary. Not only did he revamp and revive the Legion when they were really on life support, but the many costumes he created have become the template on which the Legion still bases their looks today. His art was dynamic, involving, incredible. Here’s just one sample:
I recently purchased the DC Archive Editions Legion of Super-Heroes Volume 10, which features all of Dave Cockrum’s Legion work in one high-quality volume. Here’s what it looks like:
It’s positively awesome to watch this artist come into his own during the course of all the issues contained in this volume. I highly recommend it, (and the volume after it, too, which contains Mike Grell’s first year or so on the book, which may be my favorite of all his work).
OK, being that I’ve now used up almost all of the space for this week’s Readers’ Forum, I’d better wrap up. I didn’t even get to mention Neal Adams, George Perez, and several others. And then… when I began reading Marvel Comics, a whole new set of favorites, including the late, great, John Buscema, who lived out here on Long Island, too. I was so fortunate to meet and speak with him several times when I was first trying to break into the comic book industry, myself. What a friendly, kind-hearted great man, and great artist, too.
Well, I hope that answered your question, Bill! And I promise, next week, I’ll answer lots of other readers’ questions!
And before I go, one more parting glimpse of the magnificent Dave Cockrum's work. Dave passed away in late 2006. I never got the chance to meet him and thank him for the great work he did, and for inspiring me with his visionary talent. I hope he's up there, somewhere, watching now.

UPDATE: Writer/publisher Clifford Meth wrote to let me know he is in charge of selling off Dave Cockrum's personal comic book collection. (Clifford was largely responsible for helping Dave to get a financial settlement from Marvel towards the end of his life, when he was in a serious health & financial crisis. And also organized a fund-raiser involving a bunch of other big names in comics, to help Dave at that time). Proceeds are going to Dave's widow, Paty. Please click here to get more details, and to see the large trove of classic titles available.
