Oops! That could have gone better..., she could go as a friend, just a friend.
Hi everyone. When Brad med Delia he calld her "the butch dyke." Okay--they are past that and have become friends. But i wonder something. If Brad is just using her as a showpiece it may backfire. Not that he brought a lesbian but that he brought a black woman. "Mr. Blond superstar and all american boy is with a black woman." He might do better taking Richard in the eyes of some people and the press..
I absolutely love Brad's solution of pretending to be unable to speak English. My hat goes off to you!
What do you do? Here's a minor league player, who wants to make it to the Majors. Do you hide your sexuality to further your career? It's been done. It, no doubt, still occurs. Hell, there's a young TV actor who lives openly with his partner and their family. He regularly appears on the morning shows and in People, promoting himself and his popular show. Somehow, no one asks him about his love life. Is he in the closet? You could say no. But he is.
Come Out, Brad! It's 2011. If you or we remain in the closet, there will be more Tyler Clementis!
Still one of my favorite characters. Too funny in the last panel. Something that character would say.
Brad's attitude is also insulting to his fellow players. What makes him think they don't know or at least suspect his sexuality already? As many of us are noted, his handling of the social graces is not that subtle.
It's easy for us to say that Brad (and his real-life professional counterparts), should come out: we don't have to deal with the pressures they face. Professional sports is second only to the military in terms of homophobic working environments in this country, and now that DADT has finally been repealed, sports will soon be THE last American industry where homophobia is actively encouraged. Of COURSE we'd all like Brad to come out, but I'm not sure how many of you would be willing to do the same, in his place. I doubt I would.
I like that Delia is not overtly judging Brad, just saying that his choice is not HER choice. We in the gay community should understand better than any what a deeply personal decision coming out is, and what it can mean to your profession, your family, your friends...your life. Brad (or anyone) shouldn't be pushed into coming out before they're ready just so that others can have a role model. If everyone was cut out to be a hero, the concept of heroism would mean nothing. Most of us have enough to manage just being who we are.
I think Greg is building up to Brad coming out, which would be great, as long as it's handled realistically (meaning, despite what diana says above, it's EXTREMELY unlikely that the majority of his teammates are going to be supportive [have we all forgotten what happened to Jeff?]). But if Greg finds a way to have Brad accept his award in just his tighty-whities, I honestly don't care HOW his teammates react!
brads a douche
