Well, this is a first. The Kyle's B&B website provider seems to be having some problems today; the website is still up & running, but I cannot access it to update it with the latest episode of the comic strip. Meanwhile, the other place I post the new episode of the strip, Comic Space is also having difficulties today. The whole site is down! So, what is one to do to see the newest episode of Kyle's B&B? UPDATE: It's official...I'm going to be posting new episodes here on the blog for the foreseeable future. This has worked out so well, with virtually no one writing to complain about having problems viewing the new episode, (unlike where I used to post it), it'd be crazy to go back to the old way. So, be sure to stop back here on June 5th-6th for the next episode!

Chemical King Gets SHAFTED Again!!!

If you're a comic book reader, you may know about the current cross-over storyline going on in DC's Justice League of America and Justice Society of America books, involving perhaps my favorite super-group of all time, the Legion of Super-Heroes! I'm not sure where this story's going, but it's exciting to see that the Legion I grew up with, the one that inspired me on many levels, appears to be coming back in the form I remember them. The recent issue of JSA, # 5, features a gorgeous double-page spread of the Legion, (what are actually Legion statues), and it shows thirty members, almost every member who ever meant anything to the team. Except for one. Chemical King! They left out Chemical King!!! Once again, the man in green gets shafted! If you know about Legion history, (I can imagine many people reading this right now are thinking, "Damn, I had no idea that Greg Fox was such a comic book ultra-geek!"), you'll know that Chemical King's death was...how shall I put this? Not handled well. What had been an interesting, though under-used character, was suddenly portrayed as a strange malcontent with an inferiority complex in his final appearance, (and his death scene, miscolored by a careless colorist and shoved into a rushed, abbreviated ending to the story, was insulting to fans who cared about the character). I'm sure Breyer of Kyle's B&B would agree, as we saw he is a big fan of the character, which he discusses with Brad in episode # 187, (a portion of which is shown below):















So, all I can say is....I'm happy that DC appears to be bringing back the Legion in a form that I love, but....please....lets not forget about CK, OK?

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Self-Censorship

Came across this recently, and found it kind of amusing. In Kyle's B&B Episode # 145, (the episode where Kyle & Breyer finally have sex for the first time), when I got to drawing the final panel, I had second thoughts about just how much to show of Breyer's....um.... I guess we'll call it the "pubic area". So, I ended up creating 2 versions of the episode, which I'm showing you now, here for the first time! The original, uncensored one is on the top, and the censored, ("oh, he still has his underwear on" one is on the bottom.

Why would I have bothered with this? Well...perhaps because of the problems I encountered a couple of years earlier with a shall-remain-nameless Nashville, Tennessee-based gay newspaper. You see, in an earlier episode, (# 102), when Brad & Vincenzo have sex for the first time, there was a little rear nudity shown, (although no frontal), and a general "steaminess" to the episode. This Nashville, Tennessee-based gay newspaper ran the episode, received a few complaints from readers, and promptly dropped the strip. (Thanks, guys....um, maybe you could've just not run that episode to begin with, instead of running it and then dropping the strip when a few readers react negatively. Oh, but I digress). In any case, I was a little nervous about losing another paper because of such a thing. Hence, my "cover-up" of Breyer's manly pubic zone. However, in the end, I decided to go with the original...it seemed silly to be censoring something that shows, at the very most, a little sliver of the base of Breyer's penis. And you know what? No one complained!

Or, maybe it's half-past Brad? Or, a quarter to Lance? (Looks like, right now, according to the clock in the graphic shown here, it's ten after Eduardo! Or, is that Eduardo:10 ?). Sheer Embarrassment !!!

Why are Breyer's cheeks turning red? Oh, because he is mortified at the grammatical atrocity that is spewing out of his mouth! (This from the latest episode of Kyle's B&B, #201). And it's not him who should be embarrassed... it's me!

Just to set the record straight, yes, I know he should be saying "parents" (plural), instead of "parent's" (possessive).

Sadly, it took e-mail from readers of the strip to notify me of my error! I still cannot believe I let this one slip by.

In my defense, (if there is any), I did go back and check my original notebook script and, thankfully, I wrote it correctly when I was originally composing the script for this episode. So, it was an error in transcription, (still no excuse, but it does make me feel a little better!). I can assure you, when the next Kyle's B&B book is published with this episode in it, it will be fixed!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to point this out to me. As someone who is a child of two schoolteachers, and who also minored in English in college, I do take this seriously, (almost as seriously as Brad's puca shells. Maybe even more so!).

Yes, those are Puca Shells!

In response to a number of inquiries I’ve received about the latest Kyle’s B&B episode, (the #200 bicentennial / “1970’s dream” episode), yes… that is a puca shell necklace that Brad is wearing around his neck! Hey, I take this stuff seriously! If I’m gonna do an episode set in the 1970s, you can bet I have researched it to make sure it’s authentic!

Back in the mid-to-late 70s, (was I even born then? Well, maybe, but I must have been very young! LOL), there was somewhat of a fashion rage of white puca shell necklaces, (I’m not quite sure what a “puca” is, as I’ve never heard it referred to anywhere besides this). On men, they seemed to be favored by those sort of pretty boy/hoodlum types, ( think Chachi on “Happy Days”), the kind with the hair parted in the middle, blown dry to layered perfection, usually in conjunction with Frye Boots and tight jeans on the verge of fraying from so many washings to get them to that perfect shade of ultra-light sky blue. They looked particularly good on someone with a dark sun-tan, as those bright-white shells made a nice contrast.

I suppose Eduardo or Richard or Lance or even Kyle might be the type to wear them, too, if they lived in the 1970’s, that is. Being that this is a “dream episode”, we’ll probably never know. Unless we have a return to the “alternate 1970’s Kyle’s B&B universe?”. Oh, and maybe start a whole parallel comic strip going? (”That 70’s Kyle’s B&B“?). Hey, why stop there? How about an 80’s version, too? (”What Has Your B&B Done For Me Lately“?). Can you just imagine the shoulder pads and big hair?. How about a 60’s version? ( “Born to B&B Wild“?). Oh, now, if only I had the time to pursue all of these avenues. Well, for now, I’m glad to present you with the 00’s version of “Kyle’s B&B“, (will this decade ever get a name? The “zeroes”?).
