Richard's appearance sucked the air out of a romantic moment - depriving Coach of articulating his feelings and Kyle to come to his own decision after hearing Coach's invite and efforts to woo him. Richard has his purpose in the strip, though he's often depicted behaving inappropriately (not minding his business, flirting with cops at a crime scene with a dead person, making a pass at Breyer and later being hostile towards Breyer following the latter's indiscretion / gaslighting). Law and Order SVU, an otherwise brilliant TV show, decided to add Gilbert Gottfried as a forensics tech, for comic relief (on a show dealing with rape). That's what Richard's character often feels like. It's not my strip or story, just a note how this character's "comedy" is often cringeworthy. Richard needs (deserves even) his own available man - pair him with Price - there might be sexual tension, and it'll enable Richard to keep an eye on Price, influence him to be kinder.
The briefs were certainly odd as a pretext for the visit, the apology would have sufficed as a reason. If there's ever a strip set at a college dorm or porn set, the briefs fit perfectly as a plot device.
It's nice to see Kyle about to have an adult, mature relationship with someone who could be a nice fit. To @RBS7079's always astute observation, Coach does seem aggressive and angry at times - maybe that's necessary as motivation or personality for coaching, or the stereotype of what men are like in sports. In any case, we don't want what we now call toxic masculinity to trample Kyle's fragile heart.

RICHARD NEEDS TO GROW UP!: ...I've always been perturbed at Richard's stunted character growth; back in 1998, it made sense he would be a gossipy, trust-fund Baby QUEEN, who cared about clothes, Clubs, & c*cks, but EVERYONE evolved, but HIM! ...I've long stated he needs a challenge of a Boyfriend, but first, he needs a JOB! ...An internet 'Gossip Reporter' position ("Inside Edition", "E.T.", etc.), where he can ZOOM in his work, and still be at the B&B....
...I don't see Rich w/ Price(relationship-wise), but... I CAN see a drunk,'One Night Stand' thing that would be 'hush-hush' between them, and would change both, for the BETTER...also, it would make for a FUN read....

KYLE NEEDS A MAN! : ...as much as I loved Breyer, I never felt it was believe-able a rough, stubbly, Macho STUD (like him), would be with Pancakes N' Maple Syrup-y Kyle...I thought Levi was a more fitting choice, because of his 'Granola' vibe....Coach Dennis is masculine, but do we REALLY see him shoveling snow, folding the linen & buying holistic Tea!? ...dun'think SO....
..The Strip ONCE had a 'College on a Porn set' vibe, but that's in the PAST....Greg should bring more of a Early-Mid 30's vibe to the characters now....and, those wished changes, could make it HAPPEN....
Richard has always been who Richard is. His main role is as the voice of reason to tell the other characters to get out of their own way. Such as Kyle whining that he hadn't heard from Coach for several weeks. Did he forget how to dial a phone during that time? But that's Kyle - rarely taking control of situations. So he needs a Richard in his life.
